Bangalore missed watching Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kites on release day, as members of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) disrupted the screening at all theatres in Bangalore on Friday.

The KFCC alleged that the distributors of the Bollywood flick had violated its norms. The chamber, on Thursday, had asked exhibitors to refrain from screening the movie.

“Big Cinemas, distributors of Kites, violated the KFCC norm of screening other language films only in 21 theatres. They released the movie in 46 theatres in South Karnataka,” KFCC president Basant Kumar Patil, said.

Police took about 60 KFCC members into custody when they tried to disrupt the screening of the movie at Mantri Inox in Malleswaram. The detained activists were later released.

The movie would likely be screened on Saturday, but in limited number of screens. KFCC claimed the distributors apologised in a meeting held on Friday night, for releasing the movie in close to 50 theatres.

Earlier, the KFCC took out a rally across the city, forcing all theaters where Kites was to be released to cancel screening the movie.

“We have stopped the screening in all theatres in Bangalore today, and by evening, the same will be done throughout south Karnataka, unless the distributors agree to our conditions,” Patil announced.

Starting from Mantri Inox in Malleswaram, the KFCC members visited multiplex screens across the city, and stopped the screening. KFCC members also seized reels of the movie.

Inox multiplex in Garuda mall, however, managed to hold a screening of the movie, before cancelling the subsequent screenings.

A KFCC source said later in the night that the chamber would announce its take on the issue at a press meet on Saturday..
Film buffs, especially youngsters, who arrived at theaters across the city, returned disappointed after the screenings were cancelled. Some places experienced tense moments, as protestors’ barging into malls angered those who had arrived to watch the much-awaited movie.

“The KFCC doesn’t want Kannada movies to be affected. It is preposterous and infuriating to stop the screening of a Hindi movie. Their act spoils the city’s image,” Varun Suvarna, a student and regular moviegoer, opined.

A diehard Hrithik Roshan fan, Pari Prakash, however, was happy. “I watched the movie without any disturbance whatsoever. I enjoyed it too. The KFCC should lift the ban as soon as possible,” she said. Pari watched the movie at Inox, Garuda.

Some others, who had booked seats for Kites in advance, opted for other movies. “We made the bookings a week ago. Now that the movie has been cancelled, we are trying for an alternative movie and hoping to get the refund as soon as possible. It is better if the KFCC lifts the ban.” 10th grader Suvin Sukesh said.
Rex, on Brigade Road, stopped the screening even before the protesters arrived. BM Nagraj, movie manager, said the theatre would refund everyone who had made advance booking.
