It is believed that Influenza-A virus spread from pigs many years ago. “It is a strain of pigs, bird and human viruses which are combined. This novel gene has been seen in an exaggerated manner for two years in India and the world. It spreads via the respiratory route,” said an official from the health department.

The virus attacks those with weak immune systems and those with concomitant disease. “The Government has categorised swine flu into three categories. For category A (those with a simple flu and fever)  there is no treatment required. For Category B, treatment is required but no tests required. This is for those with a concomitant disease like respiratory issues, cardiac or diabetic issues. But, for category C, where breathlessness is severe and fever does not reduce even after 48 hours, hospitalisation is needed and throat swabs are sent to Nimhans for virology tests.

Stocks of Tamiflu tablets have been freely distributed to government hospitals and also to select private ones.
