Nandhini Deluxe Hotel, Imperial Hotel, Empire, Chung’s Chinese Corner found guilty of disgust-inducing practices.
If your plan for a day out in the city includes having a meal at a hotel, think again. Many reputed eateries have been serving stale food, leftovers, have a dirty kitchen and use same utensils to prepare vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.
The BBMP’s health committee conducted raids on some eateries on Tuesday. It stumbled upon some disgust-inducing practices, which can make one swear off eating out ever again. What is particularly appalling is that big hotels have been found guilty: Nandhini Deluxe Hotel (Gandhinagar), Imperial Hotel, Empire (both in Vasanthanagar) and Chung’s Chinese Corner (Cunningham Road) are among the culprits.
The inspection team’s first stop was Nandhini Deluxe Hotel. It found that the hotel was using stale chicken and mutton in its dishes, such as biryani. On top of that, the customers were being served a day-old biryani. Even pickles were outdated. The kitchen was found to be dirty and ill-maintained.
Chairperson of the BBMP’s health committee, S Venkatesh Babu, directed health department officials to immediately lock the hotel. Then the committee raided Hotel Imperial and Empire at Vasanthanagar. There, it found that the kitchens were not clean. Also, these two hotels had not procured food licence. Babu directed health department officials to issue notices to the hotel owners.
Babu said that at Chung’s on Cunningham Road, the eatery had stored stale food to serve to customers. Also, same utensils were being used here to prepare vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Babu said the kitchen, too, was bereft of the basic minimum standard of cleanliness. He said he has asked health department officials to act against the eatery. He added that as per the rules, the erring eating joints can be slapped with a fine ranging from `10,000 to `1 lakh.
The hotels can reopen only after they give an undertaking that they will follow all the rules. The BBMP’s health department officials will visit the hotels again to assess the compliance of norms and only then will they give the clearance to resume business.
The chairperson of the health panel said they would carry out special drives to keep a check on erring hotels.
