About 90% of children suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

In India, from 2000 onwards, there has been an increase in about 4% in the number of diagnosed cases every year.

“However, ADHD is one of the most under diagnosed disorder in the country. We need to identify the problem early so that it can be solved,” said Dr Sulatha Shenoy, child and adolescent psychologist. He was speaking at the launch of state’s first ADHD management programme by Sattvam, a speciality homeopathy clinic for women and children.

“Children with ADHD suffer from lack of attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour. They have trouble planning ahead and finishing projects,” said Dr Deepak Shah, director, Sattvam.  “Such kids need remedial and behavioural therapy,” he said.

‘Manage ADHD @ Sattvam’ that was commenced on Tuesday provides an integrated approach towards the disorder. The programme is specifically designed to support the needs of children with ADHD in a three-pronged manner. Children will be approached with medicines and remedial measures, their parents will be given emotional support and guidance, and their schools will also be sensitised about the issue.

“Children with ADHD also suffer from poor social skills and academic performance. Close to 20% of them have learning difficulty and 80% have academic problem.  We need to restructure their daily schedule. Our programme will concentrate in this area. We will give them adequate training to better their social skills. For that, we will introduce them to various sports like swimming and gymnastics,” said Dr Shenoy.  The clinic is organising awareness programmes to help guide teachers identify such children. “This will help them manage children with ADHD. Teachers can thus persuade parents to seek professional help for such kids,” said Sharada Jagannath, adolescent counselor.

Sattvam also has a pupil empowerment programme that concentrates only on low achievers at a school level. “We teach different learning and memory techniques to help them excel. This six-month programme with 12 sessions will boost their confidence level . Till now, Sindhi School and Sarada Vidyalaya have come forward to take up the programme. More schools have approached us. They will take up the programme once the vacation is over,” said Jagannath.
