The vigour displayed by namma Bangaloreans in calling Bangalore a Garden City does not reflect in the choices made by city’s home owners towards making their homes ‘green.’

This has been visibly evident in the survey conducted by Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd’s (BCIL) ZED Eco-Pulse that annually measures the progress of Bangalore’s multitudes on various sustainable measures concerning their daily lives.

This year, the Eco-Pulse survey measured the awareness of home owners on the eco-impact of their homes and mapped their sensitivity towards lowering it.

Despite the high-decibel activism from environmentalists, the fact that a staggering 82% of those surveyed stated that their homes were not green and over half of the target group admitted to not regretting this aspect, exposes the abject apathy towards the environment.

Chandrasekhar Hariharan, CEO, Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd, said, “It is unfortunate that some of the measures advocated find little takers in our city. Small measures such as using recycled water for car wash and toilets, rain water harvesting, solar water heaters and gadgets to check water flow can go a long way towards reducing the burden collectively on the city’s fragile ecology.

Urban farming is a great solution to cut down food miles and also effectively use kitchen waste.”

“Going green is not merely in the hands of the home owners. The government needs to bring in regulations and make eco-friendly measures compulsory,” he added.

The fifth BCIL ZED Eco Pulse Green Homes survey this year concentrated issues such as water conservation, gardens, and zero food miles, eco-friendly gadgets and fixtures and waste segregation, and disposal.
