A home guard, who was on traffic enforcement duty and was allegedly involved in heckling and assaulting a 16-year-old college girl, was suspended on Friday.
Pragna Reddy, a first-year pre-university student of Presidency College in JP Nagar, had on Thursday lodged a complaint with the Koramangala police alleging that a traffic police constable, G Srinivas, had dragged her by her hair while she was riding pillion on a two-wheeler and had assaulted her without any provocation.
The police, however, said that Srinivas was not a constable, but a home guard assigned duty by the Mico Layout traffic police.
Pragna said she took back the case on Friday on the request of a sub-inspector who visited her on Friday morning and on the advice of her father. “They (the police) told my father that I am still a college student and it is not worth the trouble shuttling between courts and police station,” Pragna said.
“My father and family members told me to take back the complaint. But I wanted the home guard punished. So I went and gave an oral complaint against him to the to the Mico Layout traffic police.”
Based on her complaint, the home guard was suspended. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic-East) BA Muthanna confirmed the suspension of the home guard.
He said Srinivas will be sent back to his original posting.
