High court adjourns GKVK road case

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday adjourned a case regarding the controversial link road being constructed by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), bisecting the Gandhi Krishi Vidyalaya Kendra (GKVK) campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS).

Dr Dwarakanath, former vice-chancellor of UAS, had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) stating that the proposed road linking Yeshwantpur to Yelahanka, via Bellary Road that runs through the campus, would be an ecological disaster and also harm research projects at the varsity.

Justice Manjula Chellur heard the case and adjourned it after the Palike’s counsel, KN Putte Gowda, submitted that the civic body had already spent Rs100 crore for the project and the road was almost complete, with just asphalting work left.

The Palike also stated in its affidavit that the road alignment was changed, in collaboration with the university officials, so that the road would run along the campus, and not bisect it. It added that there was no truth behind the allegation of a pre-existing road in the campus.
