It’s time to salvage the vestiges of our heritage in the face of relentless advance of modernity. Bangalore may be today considered as India’s Silicon Valley, but there are several parts in the city that still have not lost their old world ambience, especially their vintage houses. And if you are one of the lucky ones residing in such a home, you will know that it isn’t easy to keep your house old and maintain it.

But don’t give up and think of pulling down those old and beautiful buildings before building anew. The Bangalore chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) now has an offer for you.

The INTACH has announced the special offer of free appraisal of heritage buildings and traditional homes to mark the World Heritage Day, which will fall on this Sunday.

Owners of heritage properties in Bangalore can contact the trust for a one-time free inspection by conservation architects to determine the integrity of the structure.

They will assess the structure’s condition and will also check for cracks, water seepage, restoration and such others problems. The offer is for three months. “This is an effort to create an awareness about such services. Demolition is the first thought that comes to the mind of building owners when they feel their homes are dated. Many do not know the availability of such services,” said Sathya Prakash Varanashi, conservation architect and convener, Bangalore chapter of the INTACH.

While there had been a lot of thrust to develop the city on par with Singapore in facilities, one should not forget that modern cities across the world preserved their heritage buildings, he said. “Even in Singapore, the old China Town area is protected,” he said.

He also felt that old structures in places like Chickpet and Chamarajpet were in need of urgent repairs. “The restoration helps retain the continuity of such areas by keeping the old landmarks and structures alive,” he said.
