Determined to exploit the failures of the two national parties, BJP and Congress, the JD(S) has taken a headstart in preparing for the forthcoming assembly elections. The party has finalised its candidates for about 60 constituencies and almost identified the best candidates for another 90.

“The party has decided to contest all the 224 assembly constituencies. We have drawn up an elaborate campaign strategy and announcing the candidates’ list much ahead of the assembly elections is part of that,” JD(S) spokesman YSV Datta said.

According to party sources, former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy will contest the assembly polls from Ramanagar constituency. His wife Anita Kumaraswamy, who is representing Madhugiri constituency, will be shifted to Chennapatna.

CN Balakrishna, brother of Deve Gowda’s son-in-law Dr CN Manjunath, is almost certain to be fielded from Shravanabelagola seat in Hassan district. However, party supremo HD Deve Gowda is yet to take a final decision on the entry of his second daughter-in-law, Bhavani (wife of HD Revanna) into the poll arena. JD(S) sources have ruled out the chances of HD Revanna’s son Prajwal contesting the assembly polls as he has not attained the eligibility age of 25.

The party’s hopes of grooming Sandalwood star Pooja Gandhi as a youth mascot to woo women voters backfired after the controversy over her negative role in the film Dandupalya. The actress, who got engaged recently to a realtor in the city, is moving away from party politics. Party state president HD Kumaraswamy has already completed one round of tour in the state addressing several rallies. The party had also organised big rallies targeted at wooing the Muslim community, physically disabled and women.

Announcing candidates much ahead of the polls will be an advantage as candidates would have enough time to build rapport with the people, hold mass contact programmes, and take the lead in fighting against the failures of the BJP government, Datta said.
