After putting the state government on the defensive over alleged discrimination against Hassan district in taking up development work, former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda has returned to his pet subject — the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE). Gowda is all set to join the hunger strike to protest against the NICE Road and township project on Saturday.

He has extended his support to the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by farmers. On Friday, he visited Town Hall, the venue of the farmers’ protest, and expressed his solidarity with their cause.

About 100 farmers, including several leaders of various organisations, launched an indefinite fast in front of the Town Hall on Thursday, protesting that they had not got justice as the government set about acquiring their lands for the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project.

The farmers claimed that NICE, which is implementing the BMIC project, has been given 1,330 acres in excess of what was required. Farmers accused the KIADB  of handing over the  excess land to NICE through an absolute sale deed, instead of dropping the acquisition. They were deprived of their lands and homes, even though their lands were not required, they said.

The farmers said land acquired from them lay near the peripheral and link roads. Thus, although the site was much sought after, they were not paid compensation amounts in keeping with the market value of land. They were paid only `3 lakh per acre, whereas an acre in the area would sell for crores, they said.

The farmers alleged although 20,193 acres of land was allotted for the project, there was no clarity about which land had been allotted. NICE authorities resolved the confusion rather ‘nicely’, the claimed, acquiring land just where they wanted.
