Bangalore: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to provide reservation in higher education for single girl child.

Acting on a petition filed by MS Supreetha, Justice AS Bopanna asked the university to consider the representation made by the petitioner, an MBBS graduate, seeking a seat for being a single girl child.

The petitioner, who had graduated from a Kolar college in 2008, had applied in vain for post-graduation courses.

The petitioner's contention was that the central government provided for free education for the single girl child and the same was true in several states like Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. She said that Karnataka should also follow suit.

The High Court has directed the respondents to consider the petitioner's representation and also make special provisions regarding reservation for single girl child.
