The high court on Monday adjourned a case regarding solid waste tender to Thursday.

Hearing a public interest litigation filed by PR Ramesh, former Bangalore mayor, and M Pani, former corporator, a division bench headed by justice V Gopala Gowda adjourned the case to March 18.

The petitioners contended in the court that with the model code of conduct in place the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had shown undue haste in inviting tenders for solid waste management contract that was likely fetch to Rs300 crore per year for the corporation. The existing contract would expire on March 31. The Rs4,000 crore tenders were floated in October.

The court observed that the corporation was doing nothing for keeping the city clean. “What is the BBMP doing? The residents are the ones who suffer from the negligence of the corporation. The garbage from the national highways is pushed down to sewage lines. This may cause a number of diseases. This is also creating lots of health problems to the senior citizens. Though about 10,000 employees work in the BBMP, nothing has been done in this regard,” the court said.

Even the waste dumped right in front of the ministers’ houses was not removed properly, observed the court. “If this is the case of ministers, what will be the fate of common man?”the court asked.
