A woman killed herself and her seven-year-old daughter on Sunday afternoon because she was allegedly sick of the harassment by her husband and mother-in-law.

The deceased are N Deepa, 34, and her daughter RS Muktha, residents of KR Road. Deepa set herself and her daughter afire when they were alone in their house about 2.30pm. The police said Deepa’s husband and mother-in-law were not treating her and the children well and that is why she committed suicide.

Deepa had got married to Prasad HS, an engineer with a private company, 12 years ago. They had two daughters: Megha HS and Muktha HS. The police said Prasad had stopped speaking to his wife two months ago.

On Sunday afternoon, Prasad had gone to attend a function along with his mother and Megha. When Deepa was alone in the house with her seven-year-old daughter, she took the extreme step.

Their neighbours heard their screams and alerted police control room. The police and the fire department officials rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. However, the mother and the daughter had succumbed by then. The bodies were kept in the house till evening, until Deepa’s father went there. He has filed a complaint with the police.
