A young wife allegedly hanged herself to escape harassment by her husband and his family members over dowry.

J Mamatha, 23, a resident of Sir MV Nagar in Ramamurthynagar, took the extreme step when she was alone at home on Monday.

In a death note left behind, she said her husband Ashok Kumar, mother-in-law Rathnamma, brother-in-law and their relative used to harass her by demanding her to get dowry from her parents. She said she was taking her own life because of depression over the harassment he suffered.

Rathnamma and her younger son are absconding after the incident.

Kumar, working as an executive manager in a software company in Kundalahalli, came home around 7.30 pm and knocked on the door.

When there was no response, he opened the window and saw his wife hanging from the roof of their bedroom with her dupatta (long scarf).

After alerting the police, he informed her father Jayaram and mother who arrived with other relatives.

Jayaram filed a dowry harassment case with Ramamurthynagar police.

Police said that unable to bear the harassment, Mamatha had recently returned to her parental home in Munnekolala near HAL. The families reached a compromise and she finally returned to her husband’s home 15 days ago.

Mamatha, who completed her B Com in a private city college, was married to Kumar one-and-half years ago.
