Hampi Utsav starts tomorrow

Hampi Utsav 2010 is festivity at its best for all enthusiasts of art. Artistes from across the world will converge at Hampi, from Wednesday January 27 to Friday 29, on the occasion of the 500th year of emperor Krishnadevaraya’s coronation in the Vijayanagara empire.

Celebrity artistes of international repute will perform at Hampi, the then capital city of the Vijayanagara empire. Hindustani vocalist Pandit Jasraj-cum-Bollywood actor and Bharatnatyam dancer, Hema Malini, along with dance exponent Sonal Mansingh, troupes from Sri Lanka and China, Vidyabhushan (Carnatic vocal), MM Keerwani, Mysore Manjunath (violin) and Hamsalekha, will perform at the main stage named after the emperor. The stage will also serve as the venue for the introductory and valedictory ceremonies.

Six stages have been erected for the festival. Each one is dedicated to a particular genre of music or cultural activity and all activities will take place simultaneously.

The Gangubai Hangal stage will host vocal and instrumental music. Pandit Rajashekar Mansur, Muddu Mohan, Kasarvalli sisters, Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni, Vani and Veena Mardur, TS Satyavati, Jayateerth Meundi and Balchandra Nakod will perform on the stage named after the late Hindustani vocalist.

The stage named after dancer and Krishnadevaraya’s consort Tirumalamba will host dance performances. Light music and folk songs will be performed on the stage named after playwright and gamaka exponent Joladarashi Doddanagoud. Actor Bellary Raghava. Archana Udupa, Appigere Thimmaraju, Kumar and Malashri Kanavi, Puttur Narasimha Nayak and Yeshwant Halebandi will perform here.

The Bhuvana Vijaya will host theatrical performances while the Purandara Dasa will be devoted to harikathe, rangageete, tatvapada and gamaka performances.

The festival will also showcase rural sports, adventure sports, book exhibitions and history symposia.

A cultural centre on the lines of Akshardhama and Kurukshetra, which will feature the history and culture of the Vijayanagara empire, will be inaugurated. Coins and stamps featuring Krishnadevaraya will be released on the occasion.
