A division bench comprising justices N Kumar and Arali Nagaraj listened to submissions made by attorney general (AG) of India GE Vahanvati with regard to re-opening of HAL Airport for commercial operations, and reserved orders.
The AG argued that HAL Airport was not granted a licence for civil operations. It was only a defence airport and under Rule 78 of the Aircraft Rules permission was granted for the creation of an airstrip for commercial flights. After the rules were amended in 2004, the airport failed to apply for a licence for commercial operations, as was necessary, the AG said.
