People in six districts of the Hyderabad-Karnataka celebrated the joy of getting the Lok Sabha nod to the bill for giving special status to the region on Tuesday.

When the members of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samithi got the good news, they gathered at Vallabha Bahi Chowk in Gulbarga and distributed sweets to people. The scene was equally grand at Ambedkar Circle in Raichur, Ashok Circle in Koppal and on all the main roads of Bidar, Yadgir and Bellary districts.

Speaking to DNA, convener of the Samithi, Raghavendra Kushtagi, recalled the struggle of decades and assured that people would make good use of the special status. “As we get reservation in education and employment, our future generation is expected to achieve a lot despite adversities like lack of infrastructure, poverty and ignorance,” he said.

Pointing out that the HK region was the first one in the country that vied for getting special status, he mentioned that it should have been given when states were formed on linguistic basis. “Our another region, Telangana, which was also ruled by Hyderabad Nizams, had got the status long back. However, we are lucky to have amendment with 371 (J), which also provides separate development board along with reservation facility,” he noted.

Koppal district president of the Samithi, HS Patil, and secretary Allama Prabhu Bettadur recalled the struggle and opined that involvement of students made the government respond to the demand. “Though we had chief ministers—Veerendra Patil and Dharm Singh—from the region, it was far away from development. Even Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board failed to meet expectations of people,” they said.

Various leaders thanked Vijanath Patil, who had resigned as minister twice condemning the negligence towards the region. “All credit goes to him for his selfless struggle for decades,” they added.
