The government will consider banning Sri Rama Sene in the light of a recent incident of its activists allegedly hoisting a Pakistan flag at Sindhagi in Bijapur district, said home minister R Ashoka.
“There was evidence of the involvement of right wing Sri Rama Sene in the recent hoisting of Pakistani flag in Bijapur district,” he said. However, he ruled out any decision in immediate future on banning the outfit as it is a long process.
“The probe is in progress and we will take a decision in this regard when chargesheet is being filed. Strong, clinching evidence is needed for banning any organisation. At this stage, there is no need to ban Sri Rama Sene. I will discuss the issue with chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda,” Ashoka added.
It may be recalled that six college students, alleged members of the Sri Rama Sene, were arrested for hoisting Pakistan’s flag on the tahsildar’s office in Sindhagi on January 1.
Ashoka claimed that incidents of communal violence had come down during the three-and-half-year tenure of the BJP government. The number of such incidences has come down to seven to eight from 28-30 every year.
According to the home minister, police are keeping a strict vigil at places where incidents of communal violence took place in the past five years.
