Close on the heels of the recent spate of mishaps at the Metro work sites in New Delhi, the urban development department at the Centre has directed all upcoming Metro projects in the country, including Namma Metro, to hold orientation programmes for its workers. This is being done to ensure that accidents in the project areas are done away with.

“There is provision under the project guidelines to provide training for workers on the safety aspects at work sites. To start with, Metro managements have been asked to conduct one-week orientation programmes,” said M Ramachandran, chairman of Namma Metro project.

Officials at the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said they have already initiated the training programme that would focus on educating workers to be safe at work sites, and also to ensure safety of passers-by.

The BMRCL spokesperson said that tool-kit meetings are being conducted everyday. “This meeting provides instructions to the labourers on the safety measures to be taken for different types of jobs at the site. There are also monthly meetings to explain the safety aspects and precautionary measures to be taken,” he added.

Principal Secretary to Government of Karnataka (urban development department) D Thangaraj told Sunday DNA that the direction from the union secretary (urban development) is a welcome measure. “With Metro works taking pace in Bangalore, there is an urgent need to look into safety,” he said.

Ramachandran said that the workers’ training assumes importance considering one of the mishaps happened because a worker was not aware of the crane passing towards him. He added that strengthening the safety and design wings of Metro projects would go a long way to ensure safety.

“We are also directing the project engineers to do a recheck of the Metro stretches, wherever there are projections and curves,” he said. Similar safety training programmes for contractors must also be conducted, he said.
