Bangalore: Officials of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) have requested consumers to reduce consumption to save energy and also use alternative sources of energy. BESCOM officials say the ideal way to beat power cuts and spiralling demand is to switch over to solar energy.
BESCOM managing director Tushar Girinath told DNA that people should use solar water heaters and solar lighting. Air-conditioners must be kept in normal mode and LED and CFL lights must be used instead of incandescent bulbs. "Do not have ostentatious lighting when not needed. Most hotels and restaurants use unnecessary lighting to attract customers and this must be reduced. We have also restricted the supply of electricity for billboards. No power will be supplied after 10 pm and many letters have been written to various civic agencies in this regard. We have also restricted the power supply from unlimited to 2-3 KW since April this year. Further, we also appeal to people to use alternative and limited lights in commercial establishments where power consumption is maximum, like the one that has been introduced by the Brigade Road Shop-keepers Association,'' he added.
BESCOM has requested BBMP and BDA to replace streetlights and park lights with LEDs and they will soon be calling for tenders in this regard. It has also written to the BBMP to install alternative circuits and dimmers for streetlights so that power can be supplied in a phased manner and ensure equitable distribution of the load on the grid. These systems have proved successful in Kerala, Chennai, Tirupati and Madurai, added Girinath.
