Girl slips into lake, mother and sister try to save her; all drown

Two school-going children who wanted to make full use of their Sunday holiday and accompanied their mother to a lake, met with a tragedy that claimed all the three lives. They drowned in Dodda Maranahalli near Tavarekere on Sunday.

Two school-going children who wanted to make full use of their Sunday holiday and accompanied their mother to a lake, met with a tragedy that claimed all the three lives. They drowned in Dodda Maranahalli near Tavarekere on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Lakshmamma, 30, and her daughters Kavya, 12, and Bhavana, 9, all residents of Kalayyana Palya.

Lakshmamma went to the lake around 7.30 am to wash clothes. Since they didn’t have to go to school on Sunday, Kavya and Bhavana decided to accompanied their mother.

Tragedy struck even before Lakshmamma could begin washing clothes. Kavya slipped into the lake as soon as they reached there. Seeing Kavya struggle, Lakshmamma and Bhavana jumped in to rescue her, but since none of them could swim, all three drowned in the 15-foot deep lake.

The incident came to light around 9.30 am when Lakshmamma’s brother-in-law Veerabhadriah went to the lake to inform her that a few relatives were waiting for her. The relatives had come to the woman’s house around 8 am.

Veerabhadraiah saw only slippers and clothes at the bank and returned thinking they would have returned after washing the clothes.

But the got worried when the three did not return home for some time. Veerabhadraiah, along with some villagers, rushed to the lake and found that the three had drowned.

Tavarekere police of Ramanagara district rushed to the spot and summoned the rescue team of the fire and emergency service department. The three bodies were fished out around 2 pm.
The police shifted the bodies to Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysore Road for postmortem. The bodies were handed over to the family in the evening.

Police have registered an unnatural death case. They clarified that it was an accident, and not suicide.

Lakshmamma’s husband Shivakumar works in a hardware shop in KR Market. Kavya and Bhavana, were the couple’s only children. Kavya was in VI standard student while Bhavana was in III. Both were students of a government school in Kalayyana Palya.
