Shankar, alias Chandru, shot dead by the police on Saturday, was part of a gang of robbers, who often kidnapped call girls to satisfy their carnal desires, police said on Sunday.

Police started hunting for the gang after they allegedly kidnapped and raped a 24-year-old MBA graduate, working as a trainee at a watch manufacturing unit in Hosur. The woman from Jharkhand was returning to her sister’s house in Electronics City, when she was forcefully taken away in a car and raped.

Chandru fell to bullets after he ignored orders to surrender and attacked a police team. One of his gang members, Somashekhar alias Shekar, was earlier arrested. Three others, including Shankar’s brother, were still at large. None of the call girls kidnapped and raped by the gang had complained to the police, indirectly helping the robbers.

“The accused (Shekar) confessed that the Electronics City kidnap incident was not the first they had committed. They had raped a number of girls. He cannot recall how many girls they had kidnapped and raped. So far, there are no complaints registered against the gang, and our investigation shows that the women were call girls, which could be the reason why no complaints were lodged,” a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, Parappana Agrahara police inspector VK Vasudev said Shankar was at the wheels when they arrested Shekhar after a 20-km chase. The officer noticed the black Santro when it overtook the police vehicle. “After identifying the car, we alerted the control room. We blocked the car, but they managed to drive away. However, after a 20-km chase, our vehicle collided with the car and brought it to a halt. We could not provide a specific landmark for reinforcement since it was dark. Shankar was driving the car,” Vasudev said.

Incidentally, Shankar had escaped being shot because the inspector’s firearm got stuck. The gang had then thrown beer bottles at the police to escape arrest.
