If you are considering a change from the usual malls, cinemas or workshops on a Sunday, why not consider an exciting trip to the Bannerghatta Biological Park? It’s about 25 km away from the city-centre. Travelling the distance, however, would not tire you out if you are a true wilderness freak.

With the holidays on, a visit to the Bannerghatta Park can be one of the best ways to engage your child and help him/her develop a love for animals.

To go on the day-long trip, start early if you plan to take the car. There’s less traffic on a Sunday; if you are travelling from Malleswaram, take the Outer Ring Road to reach Bannerghatta faster and with less traffic.

At the zoo, elephants greet you at the entrance. You also get the rare opportunity of looking at the country’s prized spotted cats — leopards.

“The leopard enclosure is a star attraction. The cats look more beautiful in real life, different from pictures,” recounts a visitor. Another striped beauty to look out for is Bolu the Zebra, the only one the park boasts of. Though a tad aggressive, Bolu is a visitors’ favourite.

You might also be interested in the Butterfly Park, where butterflies are reared and bred. They swarm around you as you enter. You could also spot pythons, chinkaras, deers, and peacocks (they even have the famous white peacock here).

Apart from the zoo, another attraction is the Grand Safari that is a combination of four safaris — the herbivore, tiger (includes the white tiger), bear and lion safari — all in a span of just an hour.

Tickets are available at the same entrance where you get the zoo tickets. Packed into a vehicle protected by grills and nets, passengers have a wonderful time spotting animals in the sprawling park. “I saw a lion and he looked lazy. He didn’t even roar at us,” said an excited seven-year-old, Sanat Mudur who visited the park last week.

So, get going on a memorable jungle safari. Don’t forget to take your camera along.

BMTC buses, numbers 365 and 366 (ordinary and Volvo) ply frequently from Majestic bus station to the Park and back for Rs50.

Tickets at the Grand Safari cost Rs115 (adults), Rs60 (kids) and Rs70 (senior citizens). If you want to stay overnight at the Bannerghatta Nature Camp, call Sukumar B, Resort Manager on 9845178207.
