Karnataka state Congress has a new chieftain. Party president Sonia Gandhi has selected G Parameshwar, 59, to replace RV Deshpande as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to revive the flagging fortunes of the party with taluk and zilla panchayat polls just round the corner.

Parameshwar, former minister for higher education, is a four-time MLA, who was elected three times from Madhugiri and now represents Koratagere in the assembly.

Former chief Deshpande was recently embroiled in a controversy over the alleged misuse of funds collected by KPCC for flood relief in North Karnataka. Belonging to scheduled caste, Parameshwar is a non-controversial and the most acceptable choice for the post.

“He is young and has a clean image. He has the ability and good equations with all the leaders to work in tandem with them to build the party. His simple, unassuming nature will be a big asset to energise the cadre in every part of the state,” said Siddaramaiah, the leader of the Opposition.

The Congress high command, which was unhappy with the party’s dismal show in the recent by-polls in Gulbarga South and Kadur was on the look out for a young leader and who has a clean image and acceptability to end factionalism in the party to take on the BJP in the panchayat polls to be held in December.

Parameshwar, who heads the Siddartha group of educational institutions in Tumkur, said his would be a consensual approach to take the party forward.
