The revenue department on Saturday declared all the four taluks of Bangalore Urban district as drought prone, along with 124 others in different parts of the state. Barring BBMP area, Bangalore North, South, East and Anekal taluks have been declared drought-prone, based on a report by Karnataka Natural Disaster Management Centre.

The report took into consideration facts such as rainfall shortage and dry conditions prevailing for six weeks. The report also stated that Hosakote and Nelamangala taluks of Bangalore Rural district, on the city outskirts, are drought-prone.

SM Andanappa, under secretary of the revenue department, had issued an order to take up the work to supply drinking water, fodder and preservation of animals and implementation of other drought-relief works in these areas.

Bangalore Urban and Rural districts’ drought-prone taluks have severe drinking water problems and in most of these places, borewells have dried up and drinking water is being supplied through tankers. SR Patil, the opposition leader in the legislative council, had raised concern about the depleting groundwater table in Bangalore and urged the government to take up the measures to preserve the water sources in the city.
