A 12-year-old girl died of burn injuries in Vijayanagar on Tuesday. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.
The deceased, Padma, was a student of class V at Asian School and a resident of New Colony, Hampinagar in Vijayanagar.
After preliminary investigation, the police suspect she committed suicide.
The postmortem will reveal the cause of death. At 12.15pm on Tuesday, Padma fainted in school.
She complained of headache and her teachers sent her home.
Her younger siblings, who study in the same school, accompanied her home. Their mother, a construction labourer, told Padma that they would take her to doctor in evening and left for work.
Padma’s mother and siblings left home and locked the door from outside. Padma was resting on a sofa.
The police said a short-circuit might have caused the fire. However, candles and a can of kerosene were found in the house, hinting that it could be suicide.
The doctors, too, orally confirmed this to be a case of suicide.
Padma’s parents, Cheluvaraj and Varalakshmi, both construction labourers, told the police that Padma might have lit a candle, which must have fallen on the sofa set.
The body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for postmortem.
