A five-year-old boy drowned in a water sump in Nelamangala on Wednesday. His mother, too, fell into the sump and was rescued by the neighbours.

The deceased, K Tanmay, was the son of Kumaraswamy, a software engineer.

The police said the incident took place at 2 pm, after Tanmay came from his school.

He was playing near the sump and fell into it. His mother, Vaishnavi, a homemaker, too, jumped into the sump to rescue him.

Their neighbours, who heard Vaishnavi’s cries for help, rushed to her aid. While they rescued Vaishnavi, they could not save Tanmay.

The police shifted the body to a government hospital for postmortem, which was held on Wednesday evening.

The police said they would investigate to ascertain if the boy’s death was accidental.

The police said they wanted to find out whether Vaishnavi fell into the sump while trying to save Tanmay or if she planned to kill her son and then herself. An investigating officer said they would question Vaishnavi once the boy’s funeral has been held. A police officer said they would conduct a probe if somebody from the family alleged that the incident was not an accident.
