Excessive caution proved disastrous for a couple in Jayanagar on Friday when their two children locked inside the residence died due to suffocation after a fire broke outin their house.

The incident occurred on the third floor of Krishnaveni building in Makkabalabande, Jayanagar IV Block. The deceased identified as Bharat Kumar, 8, and Sharat Kumar, 7, were students of Geetha Education Society.  Their parents are autorickshaw driver Byataraju, 35, and Bhagya, 30, who works as domestic help.

Neighbours said the couple used to lock them inside the house fearing they could get into bad company, leading to poor academic results. But, on Friday, the playful children put some books on fire that spread across the house. “Unknowingly, the boys forgot to douse the fire. Both were found under the cot. We suspect that the smoke might have suffocated them to death,” said the police.

The parents always ensured that they did not keep any hazardous objects within their reach. However, this time, the boys,  by mounting on a chair, reached out to the match box kept in a shelf.

“Around 11.45 pm, the boys might have taken out all their books, heaped them and set them on fire. The fire spread to the bedsheet and some of the clothes kept near the bed. The smoke spread, suffocating the children to death,” said Lakshmamma, the chidren’s grandmother.

None of the neighbours detected any smoke. The incident came to light around 1 pm. “I had come to house at 11.30 am to give them  food. My husband is usually in the house in my absence. Today, there was an engagement function in Hosur. So he  went to attend that,” said Bhagya.

They  were rushed to the Sri Krishna Sevashrama Hospital in Jayanagar. Doctors said the duo was in critical condition and advised the mother to shift them to some other hospital. They were then taken to Rajashekar Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. Hospital authorities said the boys could have been saved had they been brought to them a little earlier. The bodies were taken to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem that will be carried out on Saturday. A case has been registered in Tilaknagar police station.
