For twenty years, Rajgopala Reddy, 60, an ex-bank employee, ran a lucrative fake question racket in the state. With an extensive network of agents, Reddy and his gang cheated hundreds of students looking for a shortcut to success; it also made them rich.

But Reddy’s operation ended on Saturday night when the central crime branch (CCB) of the city police arrested him and two others and busted a fake Comed-K question paper racket. The police also rescued 26 students and their parents, who were locked up in four flats.

Police commissioner BG Jyothi Prakash Mirji identified the three arrested on Sunday as Rajgopala Reddy, a resident of Koramangala 6th Block, CT Basavaraju, 37, and Santosh, 25, both residents of Tumkur district.

The gang was cheating students by selling fake Comed-K question papers. Police said each question paper was sold for Rs11 lakh.

The students—12 girls and 14 boys—and parents were locked up in four flats in Primrose apartments, located on Sarjapur Road, to prevent the gang’s plan from being busted, police said.
Police said the gang had earlier taken money from students on the pretext of getting them admitted to colleges, but disappeared once the cash changed hands.

“We are interrogating the arrested to find out if others were also involved in cheating students,” Mirji said.

The arrested had rented the four flats. The students were given duplicate question papers of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The police seized 41 question papers and sent them to Comed-K authorities who said the question papers were not real.
According to the police, the gang mainly targeted students from Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Sometimes, students were also offered seats in prestigious medical and engineering colleges.
Besides question papers, ¤6 lakh in cash and four mobile phones were also seized from the accused.
