You must have heard about jobless, impoverished dudes resorting to stealing for survival. But what about educated youth employed in reputed private companies shoplifting valuables just for the heck of it?

Police recently arrested Kamal Kumar Shambhavani, 25, a resident of Kundhalahalli and an employee of Bharti Axa Life Insurance for stealing foreign liquor bottles from Madhuloka Liquor Boutique, a retail shop which sells liquor at MRP rates, at Cosmos Mall on Whitefield Main Road.

Madhuloka have been missing bottles worth Rs10 lakh for a couple of years. When the shop owner contacted the police, they suggested him to install CCTV cameras which were installed inside the shop six months ago. But still bottles were missing from corners where CCTV was not capturing images.

On February 3, Madhuloka employees found a Jack Daniel whisky bottle worth Rs7,500, which had been kept at the shop for some time, missing.

They immediately filed a complaint with Mahadevapura police station.

While checking CCTV footages, the police found a boy and a girl, who came to the shop together, stealing the bottle. The boy was Kamal and girl Anchal Jain, his colleague. Kamal took the bottle from the showcase and put it in Anchal’s vanity bag. They also picked some other liquor bottles, paid the bill only for them and left the shop. Kamal came to the city one-and-a-half years ago. He had completed his BA and later did a PG diploma in insurance.

In another incident, a student of Bangalore Management Academy at Doddanekkundi Cross and a native of Orissa was caught stealing cloths worth `3,000, according to police.

A police officer requesting anonymity said instances of techies and private firm employees stealing items from malls, despite drawing huge salaries, are quite common in the city.
