The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has changed the eligibility rules for professional courses seats under the sports quota. Every year, at least 300 candidates were selected under the sports category, KEA officials said.

From this year, candidates would be required to furnish certificates of their participation in national-level events, from sports
federations authenticated by the state department of youth services and sports.

KEA officials requested the commissioner for youth services and sports to send a list of national sports federations located in the state that are recognised by the government of India.

“Last year, we faced problems during the seat-selection process. Students submitted certificates from sports federations that were not on our list of recognised federations,” SP Kulkarni, administrative officer of KEA, said. “We did not allow many candidates to choose seats under the sports quota. Some disappointed candidates went to the courts to seek relief, but their appeals were turned down,” he said.

“We don’t want to face similar problems this year. If any candidate submits a certificate from federations not on this list, they will not be allowed to take seats under the sports quota,” Kulkarni said.
The list given by the commissioner for youth services and sports has 60 nationally recognised sports federations that conduct national-level sports meets and championships.

“The KEA had requested a list of federations that can certify students and we have sent the list,” Shivananjaiah, commissioner, department of youth services and sports, said.

The department has dropped three federations from the previous year’s list. They are: Throwball Federation of India, Ball Badminton Federation of India and the Indian Body-Building Federation.

Students who have taken part in national-level competitions of these bodies will not be eligible for sports quota seats.
