According to a study by the National Crime Record Bureau, one child commits suicide in every six hours in India. A work shop in the city discussed the issue on Tuesday.
About 60 Bangalore-based schools with one teacher, student and parent from each participated in the workshop organised by Activity India, an organisation working with educational institutions, in association with Horlicks,on ‘How best to tackle exam stress’.
“Rural students are less stressed than their urban counterparts. It is because they are less exposed to junk food and parental and peer pressure is high in the cities. Moreover, the sincerity with which parents and teachers guide them in the rural areas makes their lives easier,” said Ali Khwaja, a student counsellor.
“We need to ask our kids to follow a healthy diet. They should be educated about the value of food. Our traditional meals have a wholesome nutritious value. We used to follow a healthy way of cooking,” said Sheela Krishnaswamy, dietician, Bangalore Institute of Oncology and Hosmat Hospital.
There is no special diet prescribed for students just before or during exams. Parents should provide carbohydrate in right quantity during that time. Carbohydrate is necessary to generate energy. However, too much of it could make children feel sleepy, she said.
