There is something in the air of this coastal city that it grabs anything that comes from the hands of private enterprises. After pioneering private transport, private education and private health care and private banking facilities starting as early as 1904, the city is all set to accept even its domestic water from private hands.

The Mangalore City Corporation is preparing grounds to hand over the public water distribution network to private enterprises from Mumbai to provide 24x7 water supply to every household in the city with an expansion vision document “perspective 2026”.
Two companies from Mumbai, Crysal Solutions and Shah Consultancy Company, have come up with a plan to streamline the water distribution in the city.

“The project envisages the complete management of the water distribution at ¤137.42 crore, which includes laying of supply pipes in areas which do not have filtered water, metering the new lines and some old lines that have not been metered,” said R Rahul, an executive of Crysal Solutions.

“There are three models of financial management of the new system — the most suited to the Mangalore City Corporation and the participating companies is the model that demands investment of Rs96 crore by the central government, ¤2.5 crore by Mangalore City Corporation and ¤113 crore by the participating companies,” Rahul said.

Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr KN Vijayaprakash said, “Almost all areas in Mangalore city is receiving drinking water but there are some grey areas still which we hope private participation will eliminate.”
