A non-resident Indian (NRI) was on Saturday arrested on charges of alleged dowry harassment in HSR Layout police limits.Sunil Kumar (41), a green card holder in the US, was working as a software engineer in the city. He had divorced his first wife and registered his name in Shaadi.com, following which he got in touch with Sameetha (32), a native of Hyderabad. Both of them fell in love and got married in May 2008.

However, the economic slowdown played the spoiler and Sunil Kumar lost his job six months ago. He then began putting pressure on his wife to get dowry from her parents, said a senior police officer. He added that Sunil’s mother Kavitha Devi used to pressurise him to get money from his wife.

Kavitha Devi used to tell Sunil that if he had married a girl from their community, they would have got more money for dowry and there wouldn’t have been any problem during the time of slowdown, the officer said. Unable to bear the harassment, Sameetha filed a complaint with the HSR Layout police station on Friday. Acting on the complaint, the HSR Layout police on Saturday arrested Sunil and Kavitha Devi. Both have been remanded in judicial custody.
