Cubbon Park police, on Wednesday night, raided a bar on St Mark’s Road and arrested 38 persons, including 20 bar girls, on charges of running live band shows. According to police, the girls were conducting themselves in an ‘obscene’ manner to entertain the customers.
Police said that Topaz bar owners Harish Shetty and Murali were the brains behind the illegal activity. On a tip-off, police raided the bar and found the girls performing an obscene dance beyond the statutory time limit of 11pm. All the girls and staffers at the establishment were taken into custody.
The arrested persons were produced before the Eighth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACCM) court. The bar girls hailed from places across North India, including Mumbai and Delhi, he said.
Police booked cases under Section 294 of the IPC, 103 and 105 of the Karnataka Police Act and the Excise Act against them.
In a recent incident, deputy commissioner of police (west division) B Shiva Kumar was on his night rounds when he found a bar-and-restaurant in the Ashoknagar police station limits lying open. When he asked the bar manager to down shutters, he called a local police inspector, Udaya Bhaskar, to come and help him out.
However, things did not turn out the way the bar manager wanted it to. The inspector was suspended after the DCP reported the matter to police commissioner Shankar M Bidari.
