A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house on Tuesday evening. The deceased, identified as Sumaya, was a resident of Valmikinagar in Chamarajpet. Police said she committed suicide because her mother chided her for speaking on the mobile phone.

Ever since Bakrid, Sumaya has been behaving in an odd manner, her parents said. Sumaya started bunking school and every time her parents questioned her about not attending classes, she gave excuses.

On Wednesday afternoon, her mother, Salma, heard Sumaya talking in the bathroom. She asked Sumaya to come out and was shocked to find Sumaya holding a mobile phone, since they never bought her a phone. Salma demanded an explanation. However, Sumaya remained tight-lipped and did not reveal how she got hold of the phone. In fact, Sumaya even hid the SIM card. The verbal duel ended with Salma snatching the mobile phone from her daughter and warning her.

Sumaya promised Salma that she would behave. Sumaya even told that she would start attending school regularly. After a few minutes, Salma left home to purchase provisions.  At 8.15pm, neighbours spotted Sumaya’s body through a window. She had hanged herself using a dupatta.  The neighbours called the parents.  They also alerted the police, who rushed to the spot. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem. A case has been registered in Chamarajpet police station.
