Bangalore-based Crederity can give you their stamp of approval before you trust a person.
A few days ago Bangaloreans woke up to the shocking reality of a baby being rented out to a beggar, by a nanny. The problem with most blue collar employees is that they are found via word-of-mouth most of the time, closing the possibility of background checks of that person. A Bangalore-based start up Crederity, offers a solution that might help put an end to problems like these.
Crederity, till recently, was used to certify one's own qualification as an assurance to HR professionals when applying for a job. "We realised that more than self-certification, people wanted to do background checks on other people," says Lijo Isac, marketing and product manager of the company. Most people would generally approach private
detectives to get the work done, but again the process is complicated and strictly offline.
What if you could open a browser, type in the person's name, address and request a background check? Crederity does just that. The charges levied by the site vary, depending on the amount of information required. It also guarantees to provide information within two to three working days. The whole process can cost from Rs250 to Rs1,400.
According to Lijo, a lot of people have been using the site to do background checks of marriage proposals. Matrimonial site Simplymarry.com too uses the service of Crederity to conduct background checks.
A lot of Bangaloreans have been using services such as Babajobs, before recruiting drivers or guards. Lijo says such recruits can be completely trusted as Crederity does the verification process for the people registered on the site. "There was the case of a maid who was in Bangalore and had given her permanent address as a village in Bihar. When we did a background check, it was revealed that such a person or her family never lived in that village," Lijo adds.
According to him, almost 10 per cent of the people whom they have verified have lied in their CVs or when stating information regarding their qualification and experience.
What differentiates Crederity from other services that do background checks is the strict online nature and the anonymity of the applicant involved. One also has the option of insisting on the verification of a person while having the latter bear the charges involved himself.
"For example, if a landlord wants to check the background of a tenant, he needn't pay for it himself. He can send a mail from Crederity to the tenant and ask him to verify himself. That way, the landlord doesn't have to pay for the verification," he adds.
"We have tie-ups with various parties, ranging from courier agencies to private detectives who work on our behalf. Whenever a verification is made, a report is submitted which will have extra information provided by the private detectives," Lijo says.
The process of getting self-verified is much simpler in the US than in India, according to Lijo, mainly because of the Social Security Number system (SSN — a unique number through which personal data can be verified).
