Although the 34th special court has given a death sentence to five members of the Dandupalya gang on Thursday, the case has still not come to a close.

Four other  gang members will have to face an additional charge sheet against them in the same case. Basavanagudi police are preparing to submit the charge sheet before April 23, as directed by the court.

The special court  sentenced to death the five accused, Dodda Hanuma, Munikrishna, Lakshmi, Nalla Thimma and Venkatesh, on Thursday. One among the gang, Venkatalakhmi, was already dead.

The Dandupalya gang was convicted in 28 cases. Of these cases, the accused were sentenced to death in 15 cases and life imprisonment for four other cases.

The deputy superintendent of police Chalapathi, who is the investigating officer, said that two other cases are pending against the gang, and both are related to double murders registered by the Mangalore police and Peenya police.

Meanwhile, as directed by the court, the Basavanagudi police are preparing to file an additional chargesheet against the accused.

Earlier, the police kept four persons, identified as Krishnudu alias Krishna, Venkatesh alias Ramesh, and Padma and Savithri, in custody for seven days — from January 17 to 23.

They were remanded to judicial custody in connection with the murder of 65-year-old Manjula, wife of retired HAL employee Keshava Rao Jamakhandi, in 2000.

The police solved the case three months later with the arrest of five gangsters, who reportedly told the police about the involvement of others in the murder.

Jamakhandi recently met the city police commissioner Shankar M Bidari with a petition saying the police chargesheeted only six of the 10 accused Dandupalya members, even though the remaining four gangsters had also confessed to the crime.

The commissioner forwarded the petition to the Basavanagudi police for further action. The police moved the court, which remanded the four accused to police custody.
