The day marked the birth anniversary of the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla.
“I really appreciate the efforts of the Public Relations Council of India [PRCI]. I want people to perceive women as human beings; not to elevate us, nor ill-treat us. We need an equal place in society, If that is given to us, then every women in the country will be proud,” said actor Tara. She was speaking on the occasion of Daughter’s Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla’s, held at the Jnana Jyothi auditorium, Central College.
Santoor, in association with PRCI and Bangalore university, gave away scholarships to bright young girls from economically backward classes to help them pursue their education. The event was presided over by K Jairaj, IAS, Dr N Prabhudev, vice-chancellor, Bangalore university, Padmabhushan awardee Dr B Saroja devi, noted film Celebrities like Jayanthi and Tara, among others.
The event saw the felicitation of Jija Hari Singh IPS, Vasanthi Hariprakash, Taziuyun Oomar, Reeth Abharam, and Prof Indumathi.
Singh said, “Action should be taken against doctors who support female foeticide, even NGOs should provide a helping hand in this. Parents should treat the girl child as an asset, not a burden. It is all really in perception. Events like this are a platform to recognise talent and bring wonderful women, who have striven to get equal rights, into the limelight.”
Abinaya Sharade, Jayanthi, said, “Women are as important as men in society, they generate life in this world, and balance a home and career with equal importance. In today’s world women are competing with men in all aspects. They are pilots, bankers, and police officers.”
Bangalore’s Sunshine Girl, Vasanthi Hariprakash, said, “I sometimes feel sorry for men, who actually do so much in our life. A man and a woman makes a family; we tend to forget that. We either criticise or complement. Both are wrong, sometimes it is the act of the woman that draws criticism on womankind; so before being judgmental, we need to honour the ones who deserve it. That day will be the true liberation day, when we surpass the war of sexes.”
