The Cubbon Park police have launched a web-based registration process, Hamarisuraksha.com, for senior citizens, tenants, domestic labourers, security guards, plumbers, electricians and other casual workers.

This database is expected to help the police maintain a vigil on homes of the elderly, and aid in maintaining records of those offering services like domestic work. This is expected to aid in controlling crime.

Residents and offices in the areas falling in the jurisdiction of the Cubbon Park police station can register with the police station by uploading details of employees, elderly residents, tenants, domestic workers and other casual labourers. The system will create a database and maintain photographs and fingerprints of those registered, who will be offered identity cards.

The database will be created at no cost to those being registered. Those in the target groups who wish to be part of the process could visit the police station. Residents welfare associations in the jurisdiction of Cubbon Park police station could send representatives to aid the process, and policemen will be present for verification of details.

With migrants forming the bulk of the labourers in the informal sector in the city, police feel maintaining a database would go a long way in tackling crime. Besides, the drive would also help in identifying immigrants working without valid documents.
The registration of senior citizens would help the police reach them easily in case of emergency. Cubbon Park police said that they would try and make the identification process mandatory.

“Our association representatives will go from door to door to make people aware that this service is available. Those interested would be registered, then and there. We have already contacted a few apartment complexes and hotels, and received favourable responses,” said Yateesh, who is part of a residents’ welfare association in the area.

“The system will allow the police headquarters and other police stations to track information and take appropriate measures based on trends in various areas. As more information is entered into the database, the site will provide critical statistics and intelligence information. The verification and reference details will make it easier for the police department to track workers and also help us serve senior citizens better. Police can also randomly verify available information on domestic workers and exchange workers’ information with other states,” said Cubbon Park police inspector S Badrinath.
