Disappointed with the railways stopping the construction work of a subway at the unmanned level-crossing near Wheeler Road, over100 residents of Cox Town staged a protest at the railway level-crossing on Tuesday morning.

Residents, led by NS Ravi, president, Bharathinagar Residents’ Welfare Association and S Murali, president of Federation of Bangalore North-East Residents’ Welfare Association, staged a protest demanding the railways and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to commence the work of subway immediately. They shouted slogans against the apathetic railways and BBMP authorities.

Ravi said that more than 5,000 people, including schoolchildren and college students, cross this unmanned level cross daily. “Thirteen people were killed by moving trains, while moving past the level cross between January and December 2011. We want the authorities concerned to take measures to recommence the construction work immediately,” said Ravi.

Criticising the railway authorities for their failure to complete the subway work within a stipulated time, he said that the BBMP and railway authorities have no concern about the loss of lives.

“The residents of Cox Town want the railway and BBMP authorities to complete the construction of subway as early as possible,” he said.

It may be recalled that the BBMP had already deposited `2.95 crore with railways for the construction of a subway. After a five-year delay, the railways had commenced the work last November but stopped it after a few days, attributing the halt to water seepage.

The railways, in consultation with the BBMP authorities, plan to construct a sky walk or foot overbridge instead of the subway.
The residents want the railways to construct the subway right away since the skywalk or foot-overbridge is not suitable for senior citizens. “We have already met railway officials and told them our problems but in vain,” said S Murali, president of Federation of Bangalore North-East Residents’ Welfare Association.
