This Friday, get ready for some court room drama, as The Caine Mutiny-Court Martial comes to town for the first time. Directed by actor Naseeruddin Shah, the two-act play by writer Herman Wouk is adapted from Wouk’s own Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Caine Mutiny.

The story revolves around the mismanagement aboard the USS Caine, a Navy minesweeper in the Pacific, a subsequent court martial and the mutiny for those aboard the ship.

The play, however, depicts only the court-martial event, where the audience knows of what happened on the ship, through the various witnesses (actors) who narrate their stories, leading to the chain of events. Shah’s Motley Production  features a fresh cast this time around. “We had done the play 20 years back. I have revived it with a younger cast and for almost all of them, this is their first outing on the professional stage. But this is said not in apology, but with a degree of pride,” remarks Shah.

The original novel weaves a complex military drama. So how important is it for the audiences to do their homework, before watching the play, considering it deals with a part from the entire story, we wonder.

The Caine Mutiny Court Martial is a complete drama in itself. Though it deals with the trial, the story shapes up during the course of the play,” points out Shah, adding that knowing the book in-and-out is not a necessity to understand the play, though it definitely adds to an advantage.

The novel has been adapted into films like Crimson Tide, A Few Good Men. But Shah maintains that he isn’t keen on working on a movie.

“Many movies have been made already, I am not going to make another one,” he offers.

On what he wants to highlight through the play, says Shah, “History has shown us that war is inevitable. And if that happens, it needs soldiers to fight. The play draws the portrait of an ideal soldier, who has to forget his individuality and simply obey commands.”

The Caine Mutiny Court Martial will be staged for the first time in Bangalore on March 18 in association with Concern India Foundation and Value Designbuild Pvt Ltd.
