Speaking about the garbage issue in the city, mayor D Venkatesh Murthy blamed low-rung officials of the BBMP and city MLAs for the crisis.

Speaking to presspersons on Thursday, he said the BBMP officials lack commitment towards garbage disposal. He said the officials do not even have the statistics regarding garbage generated or disposed of in the area that comes under them. He said he has directed the officials to find out the information and give it to him by Friday.

The mayor said some officers are hand-in-glove with garbage contractors. He said the officials concerned have removed the GPS device from garbage trucks so that the contractors can claim that the trucks have made more trips than they actually have.

Murthy said that this way, the officials were making huge bills for contractors and getting kickbacks in return. He alleged that there are irregularities even in weighing garbage.
Shifting his ire towards city MLAs, he said the legislators do not involve themselves in solving the issue. Giving the example of city MLAs like ministers Shobha Karandlaje, V Somanna, and S Suresh Kumar, he said they were occupied with their portfolios and were not concentrating on the city’s crisis. However, he noted that Ashoka, minister in-charge of Bangalore, had a meeting with health minister Aravind Limbavali to discuss the issue.
The mayor said that the decisions taken by the BBMP council have to go through a high-powered committee, which takes the views of the local MLAs in consideration. He said the council’s efforts would turn out to be fruitless unless the MLAs start cooperating.

Reopening Mavallipura landfill?
Nevertheless, Murthy expressed hope and said the problem should be over within 10 days. He said the council was hoping that the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board would give its permission to reopen the Mavallipura landfill. He said the MLA of the area, SR Vishwanath, had a discussion with the villagers in this regard. The mayor reiterated the government’s ‘commitment’ towards providing various facilities to the villagers, besides promising scientific disposal.

Further, the mayor said that if the garbage crisis was not resolved in three months, he would take a strict decision. When the mediapersons urged him to disclose what the strict action would be, he asked them to wait and watch.
