Ramaswamy Palya corporator N Chandra, who is accused of assaulting chief conservator of forests UV Singh, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s environmental officers Madhavi and Gurudev, is still absconding.

Amruthahalli police, who are investigating the case, said that the corporator’s mobile phones are switched off.

“We are searching for him. We arrested six of Chandra’s associates in connection with the assault case. We suspect that he might have escaped from the city and is hiding somewhere else. We are busy collecting information about his whereabouts. We will catch him soon,” a police officer, part of investigating team, said.

Chandra allegedly assaulted the officials on February 20 when they had gone to inspect Nagawara lake. The police suspected the involvement of a top BWSSB official in the incident. The official was accused of granting permission to CM Enterprises, owned by Chandra’s brother Saravana, to dump waste in the lake.

I’m innocent: Basavaraj
Meanwhile, BWSSB chief engineer (corporate planning and waste water management) SM Basavaraj, who has been accused of permitting dumping of waste in the lake, has denied that he had any role in the dumping of industrial effluents in any city lake. “I was not in the city when the attack took place. An engineer has no authority to give permission to dump waste in lakes as they don’t come under the jurisdiction of the board,” he said.

“On the day of the incident, the entrance to the STP was locked. So the tanker entered a portion of the BWSSB property that it has leased out to L and T and dumped the sewage about 100 metres away from the outlet of the STP,” he said.
