Two thieves who were trying to steal copper pipes from air-conditioners were caught by security guards at Brigade Road and handed over to police on Wednesday morning. The demand for copper has gone up in scrap shops, as many firms manufacturing electronic goods need copper. Shashank, 25, and Michael, 28, natives of Manipur and residents of Shivajinagar were caught red-handed.

On Wednesday morning around 7am, the men were caught by security guards as they were attempting to steal copper wire from the air-conditioner at Indian Terena Shop, Brigade Road.

An alert security guard called others posted on security duty. The scared men jumped from the building, injuring themselves. Four security guards gave the two men a sound thrashing before handing them over to police.

Six months ago, the two men were held in the same area, for the same theft. They had been in prison for five months, and had only been released on bail a month ago.

“The AC pipe costs more than Rs10,000. Once the pipe is ripped, the gas escapes and repairing the AC costs about Rs20,000,” said Vivek Chandiramani, owner of Archives Gallery, a shop in the area.

The two were taken to Bowring hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the jump, and later shifted to Victoria Hospital.

Shashank fractured a leg, while Michael had injuries on the hand.

The last time, the duo sold the copper pipes at a scrap shop in Shivajinagar for Rs300. Police said that the men had no notion of the value of the wire, and were keen for small sums  to buy liquor. A case was registered with Ashok Nagar police.
