It will not be a smooth sail for private universities and its promoters in the state in future
The Alliance University Bill, which will pave the way for the second private university in the state, is stuck with the opposition demanding a joint select committee to look into the bill.
Legislative assembly had passed the Azim Premji University Bill, 2010 last week making possible the first ever private varsity — Azim Premji University — to come up in Karnataka.
Minister for higher education Aravinda Limbavali told the house that the government was ready to constitute a joint select committee to analyse the pros and cons of the bill.
However, Limbavali sought time till Friday to move the motion on the joint select committee. Sources in the government said that the hurdles against passing the bill would delay the bill at least by three months, as the government had to wait for the committee report. "This will also discourage others from taking up such initiatives," said an official in the higher education department.
However, the Azim Premji University has become a reality as the legislative assembly had already given its approval. But the bill's passage in the council was not without hiccups.
