Here’s some good news for the city. Karnataka chief minister on Saturday announced a ban on permits for new autorickshaws in the city. The ban, which is part of the CM’s plan to decongest the city roads, will also reduce the increasing number of three-wheelers in Bangalore and help ease the traffic flow.

“Many felt that new autos should not be given permits, so we’ve decided to go ahead with the ban,” the CM told reporters on the concluding day of Manthana-2, a meeting with officials and ministers. Autorickshaw unions, however, are not very happy with the move. “We will submit a memorandum to the chief minister and discuss the issue with him. If they go ahead with the order, we will go on a protest,” state president of Adarsh Auto and Taxi Drivers Union M Manjunath told Sunday DNA. The autorickshaw union said the move will hit the citizens hard because the “demand for rickshaws in Bangalore is very high.”

But citizens aren’t complaining. “Autorickshaws are a big problem in the city. Lesser number means it will be easier to monitor their activities,” said Dinakar M, a civic analyst. Bhaskar Rao, commissioner for transport and road safety, said his department is ready to take action the moment it receives instructions from the CM. “There are at least 85,000 autorickshaws in the city. We will act according to what the government tells us to do,” he added.

The CM, who turned the interactive meeting into a mini-budget session, also
announced several new projects for the city and state. The state government is planning to build 40 new parking lots in various parts of the city. “The idea is to make city roads free for vehicular movement,” said a senior official from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Not just that. All citizens will be soon issued tokens whenever they register a complaint with the police. “The idea is to reduce the unnecessary delay in the registration of complaints and also registration of the FIR,” said a senior police official. The project, which will be started in select stations of the city first, will be expanded to other areas later.

The CM also directed officials of all 34 departments to come up with an action plan in tune with the Karnataka Vision 2020, before June 30. “The CM has given this deadline so that he can make the necessary announcement in the full-fledged budget scheduled to be presented in July,” a senior official told DNA.
