BJP’s victory in 10 of the 25 constituencies in legislative council polls, though a tad below the party’s expectation, has brought cheers to chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Analysing the performance in the backdrop of the Congress-JD(S) alliance to defeat BJP, Yeddyurappa described it as further indication of BJP’s growing strength in the rural belt.

Yeddyurappa said: “After a record win of 19 seats in the elections to parliament, the council polls are a clear indication of BJP’s continued growth and popularity. When elections to the local bodies were held during the tenure of former chief minister Dharam Singh, Congress had won the majority of seats and JD(S) had done well in a few Vokkaliga pockets. Now the trend has been reversed. We have gained six more seats. We have increased our tally in almost all the regions except Mandya and Bangalore Rural.”

“The claim of the opposition that the results show people have rejected the ruling BJP in several places will not hold water since BJP has won even in Mysore and Bidar. The party was expecting to win Kodagu and Chickamagalur seats but unfortunately they have gone in favour of Congress. Overall, the performance of the party has been very good under the given conditions,” he said.

The results have proved that BJP has not deviated from its path of development and the dreams of opposition leaders to make political capital out of recent developments within the BJP have come crashing. “The results have shown that BJP is conquering new frontiers while Congress and JD(S) are struggling to retain their foothold,” added Yeddyurappa.
