Bangalore: The family of Chand Bi (35) is shell-shocked and clueless about the reason behind her gruesome act of killing her three children and committing suicide soon after. The incident came to light after their neighbour Raju saw the four bodies floating in a water sump on Friday afternoon in Rayasandra in Parappana Agrahara.
Raju spotted the bodies of Chand Bi, wife of Hassan Sahab, native of Hungunda in Bagalkot district, and her three children--Riyaz (8), Shiraj (6) and Sameer (3) -- in the sump at 12pm yesterday and informed the police who fished the bodies out in two hours. On investigation, the police found that the children died after consuming poison.
Inspector, Parappana Agrahara, Vasudeva Sharma, said that the woman had administered poison, suspected to be either pesticide or insecticide, to her children and then pushed them into the sump. She soon followed them into the watery grave in a similar fashion.
"Preliminary investigations reveal that the family had suddenly become financially weak after the husband incurred losses in his lorry transport business. Relatives, however, are still unsure of what led Chand Bi to take the extreme step. Her husband is in a state of shock. He says she had never shown any signs of suicide," he said.
Police said that Hassan, a daily wage labourer, left for work to Naganathapura at 9 am and was informed about the death at 1 pm. She was last seen by a neighbour at 10.45 am. Police suspect that the act was committed between 11 am and noon.
Police said that the family was earlier living in Bagalkot, where Hassan flourished in his business for more than a decade. However, he started incurring losses and had to shut shop and shift his family to Bangalore. He started working as a labourer for Rs200 a day.
A shocked Hassan cried, "There were financial problems and constant fights. But that cannot be the reason." Some relatives even suspect Chand's frequent bouts of headache to be the cause of her act. The postmortem was conducted at Victoria Hospital and police are waiting for the report. A case of murder and suicide has been registered
