Bangalore: Conmen will go to any extent to get their hands on ill-gotten money, no matter how paltry. The police realised this from a recent incident, where a businessman was cheated by two persons - one posing as a Mumbai resident interested in renting a flat and the other as an apartment owner.
It all began on Friday, when Sunil Kumar, a businessman from HSR Layout, received an SMS from a Mumbai mobile phone number. Identifying himself as a Mumbai businessman, the sender asked Kumar to find a flat in Koramangala for him. Hardly had a few hours passed that Kumar received another message. This time, it was from a Madiwala resident who wanted to sell his vacant apartment.
Soon after, the Mumbai businessman called again - stating that he needed the flat urgently, and he would fly to Bangalore as soon as Kumar confirms its availability. The next call he received was from the Madivala resident, who told him to pay a token advance of Rs10,000 if he wanted to book the flat.
However, when Kumar called up the Mumbai resident, he said that he was rushing to Delhi on some urgent business and he would come down to Bangalore as soon as the work was done. He then asked Kumar to pay the amount, promising to return the money as soon as he touches down in the city. Believing him, the victim remitted the amount into the apartment seller's bank account on Saturday.
That was how the story ended. No matter how many times he tried, Kumar just couldn't get through to the Mumbai businessman or the Madiwala flat owner. Finally realising that he had been taken for a ride, he lodged a complaint with the HSR Layout police. When contacted, police said that they will be able to trace the accused through his bank account number.
